Abstract

This study investigated the issue of the perception of the elementary school library media specialist's role as instructional consultant. Elementary school library media specialists from two similar urban Iowa school districts with long standing support of school library media programs were surveyed. The survey attempted to determine if they perceived themselves as instructional consultants. It also asked if they believe that their principals and teachers perceive and support them as instructional consultants.

Data gathered from respondents indicated that the elementary library media specialists in the two selected Iowa school districts view themselves as instructional consultants. The respondents also indicated that they perceive that their classroom teachers and building principal view them in the role of instructional consultant. Certain factors that may be inhibiting acceptance of the elementary school library media specialist in the role of instructional consultant were also indicated by the participants' comments. The majority of the respondents reported performing instructional consultant tasks.

The study, although limited in scope, reveals that the elementary library media specialists in the two selected Iowa school districts surveyed do perceive themselves in the role of instructional consultant, and that their role as instructional consultant is seen as important by the classroom teachers and the principals.
