Abstract

Much attention is being given to authentic assessment of the writing process. This assessment which describes students' progress and instructional needs and seeks to connect instruction and assessment is qualitative and involves students in the evaluation of their achievements. This type of assessment reflects the move away from the mechanics of writing toward an emphasis on children creating meaning through the writing process. This article provides background information on writing portfolios. It shares a teacher's experience in implementing writing portfolios into a third grade program that integrates writing across the curriculum.
