Abstract
Each new music teaching job presents its unique challenges in terms of engagement, enrollment, and participation. During the first rehearsal or general music class, students quickly determine if they connect with the type of music used. This can lead to one of two options: either students are excited to learn, or are instead disinterested. The consideration that must be taken beforehand is whether the selected music is culturally relevant to the students' musical backgrounds. In addition to those perceptions, teachers should also account for the school buildings' musical backgrounds and paradigms. When teachers invest time in learning about both components, more meaningful and worthwhile music-making will more likely occur.
