Abstract
This review establishes a groundwork for the creation of universal measurement tool for recognition (named Recognition Descriptive Index [RDI]) that managers can use to diagnose problems with employee recognition. Past research in the field of recognition has not been unified so there are many frameworks and measurements that need to be combined for this multifaceted topic. The variety is demonstrated in the many different survey questions that appear in inventories or surveys claiming to measure recognition. The combination of the constructs will provide a foundation for a framework that will encompass the whole field of recognition. This review focuses on the following research questions: (1) “Which characteristics of recognition are consistently measured by recognition surveys?" and (2) “What are the critical components of an employee recognition based on these measurements?”
