Abstract

This study was designed to see if the academic qualifications of seventh an eighth grade science teachers are related to whether or not they coach.

A survey instrument was used to gather data about teachers' demographic and educational traits, as well as their coaching status. Additional data was obtained from the statistical Division of the Iowa State Department of Education.

The population included all seventh and eighth grade science teachers in public schools in Iowa. A random sample of 300 individuals was selected from this population. The Chi-square test of independence was used to analyze the data. statistically significant differences were shown to exist between the academic qualifications of seventh and eighth grade science teachers who coach and those of seventh and eighth grade science teachers who don't coach. Seventh and eighth grade science teachers who coach are shown to be academically unqualified for a science teaching position more often than seventh and eighth grade science teachers who do not coach.
