Abstract

My non-thesis option for the Master's in Science Education program was to complete a portion of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Portfolio in the category of Science/ Adolescence and Young Adulthood. The NBPTS Portfolio has a set of standards that must be followed and as a teacher you must be proficient in all of them. The first standard is to prepare the way for productive student learning. To be proficient in this area one must show that they understand students, science, and science teaching. The second standard asks the teacher to establish a favorable context for student learning. Here a teacher must engage the science learner, sustain a learning environment, and promote diversity, equity, and fairness. The next standard wants a teacher to advance student learning by fostering science inquiry, making connections in science and assessing for results throughout the process. The final standard promotes professional development and outreach for the teacher. One must reflect on teaching and learning, develop collegiality and leadership, and connect with families and the community to fulfill the standard. All of these standards are met by completing the portfolio (www.nbpts.org, 2009).
