Abstract
According to Goodman, Tung and Wilkens (2006), little is known about the epidemiology of breast cancer among men, compared to that among women. The challenge is that many studies focus on women as the majority of cancer victims (Reiner, Jacks, van Zee, and Panageas, 2011). According to Al-Haddad (2010), the lack of focus on breast cancer among men results in late diagnosis and an increased risk of mortality among male patients. The lack of focus on male breast cancer means that relatively little information is known about the epidemiology of the disease among men. Without a strong epidemiological understanding of the disease among men, it becomes more difficult to develop male-specific health education and health promotion programs to reduce their risk and increase screening. The purpose of this research paper will therefore be to use a review of secondary data from scientific publications to better understand the epidemiology of breast cancer among men, and then to review and recommend gender-appropriate health promotion strategies to address prevention, screening, and early diagnosis/treatment of this condition among males.
