Abstract
The motivational climate is the environment that is created by teachers, coaches, and in this case, athletic trainers. In both education and sport, two different types of motivational climate (mastery and performance) have emerged. Previous research revealed that perceptions of a mastery climate were positively related to higher enjoyment, task-goal orientation, and the belief that effort leads to success. In contrast, higher perceptions of a performance climate have been related to lower enjoyment, an ego-goal orientation, and concerns with failing. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in personal characteristics, as well as goal orientation differences were related to differences in perceptions of the motivational climate. Additionally, the research investigated whether the motivational climate could predict level of enjoyment and perceived competence with rehabilitation. Two hundred male and female, intercollegiate athletes from a Midwestern university participated. The athletes' perceptions of the motivational climate in the athletic training room, goal orientation, rehabilitation enjoyment, and perceived competence in rehabilitation were assessed using PMCSQ-2, TEOSQ, Sport Rehabilitation Enjoyment Questionnaire, and Perceived Rehabilitation Competence Questionnaire, respectively. Athletes also completed additional demographic information. MANOVAs revealed differences in gender, as well as starter status, were related to differences in the athletes' perceptions of the motivational climate in the athletic training room. Athletes' goal orientation (task vs. ego) was also related to their perceptions of the motivational climate. Separate multiple regressions revealed level of enjoyment was predicted by the climate, however perceived competence of rehabilitation was not. The motivational climate is present in the rehabilitation setting, and can vary depending on athletes' goal orientation and personal characteristics. Athletic trainers should be aware of the type of motivational climate they generate as certain rehabilitation outcomes are also influenced by the motivational climate.
