Abstract

This manual contains the information needed to design service learning projects for implementation into collegiate outdoor recreation departments. The program manual describes how to design, fund, implement and evaluate service learning programs in an outdoor recreation program. The theories of behavior change and their relation to service learning, the benefits of service learning for university students, how successful service learning projects are structured and the benefits service learning programs can also be found in this manual.

Many colleges and universities have outdoor recreation programs that offer adventure trips with the goal of providing participants with a memorable experience that allows the individuals to learn outdoor skills and to learn about the natural environment. Education about the environment is not necessarily the main goal of the outdoor program. Offering service learning projects along with adventure trips will give trip participants an opportunity to learn about the natural environment and the impact humans have on wilderness areas.

There are currently over 900 colleges and universities that have service learning opportunities and environmental projects constitute 40% of service learning trips (England & Marcinowski, 2007). Service learning projects create an environment that forces students to learn as they complete a task (Raelin, 1997). Giving people the opportunity to take part in service learning projects that require them to work on outdoor projects and give them an opportunity to have an outdoor experience will offer educational benefits as well as a chance to experience leisure.
