Abstract

Over the course of my career as an educator, a vast majority of my student population has identified as white and middle-class. With the education field buzzing about the importance of diversity, I have been left with questions about what diversity means within my context. The term “diverse” is an umbrella for many different types of student identities, yet it is often assumed to only pertain to race. However, many other components make up student identity. Students have identities based on their socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, racial backgrounds, and abilities, which can make modifying the classroom to reach all areas of student diversity difficult.
