Abstract

The proposal and manuscript for Threshing Days at Hilltop Farm were the result of the creative process. The manuscript was written for children ages 9-11 to enlighten their concept of Iowa farm life in the early 1940's. It was based upon the childhood experiences of the author and her sister and derived from interviews with farm people of the 1940's. The setting was the then average size farm of 160 acres. The theme centered on the activities of a typical threshing day before the impact of mechanization made drastic changes in rural life. The net result of the author's creative labors was a commentary of social history which needs to be retained for the youth of future generations.
