Abstract

According to the American Psychological Association 48% of parents find their stress to be completely overwhelming as compared to 26% of other adults. Sixty percent of parents struggle to focus, and 41% of parents report feeling so stressed that they cannot function (American Psychological Association (APA), 2024). In this study three questions are addressed 1) Are Online parenting support groups successful at supporting caregivers and children? 2) What are the outcomes for caregivers and their children when their caregivers participate in parenting support groups? 3) Are parenting support groups successful at supporting caregivers who have experienced trauma? The findings of this study are that parenting support groups increase social support, coping strategies for parents/caregivers, lower parenting stress, improve parental well-being, and normalize the challenges of parenting. Parenting support groups were also found to strengthen the parent-child relationship leading to positive outcomes for children. Children’s well-being was also improved and there was a reduction in behavioral problems. This was seen for such disorders as conduct disorder and ODD. Based on this research it is recommended that parenting support groups be recommended to parents/caregivers who have experienced trauma and their families as parents have the potential to positively impact the community.
