Abstract

Historically, gay people have come under heavy repression in this country, causing them to become an invisible minority, even though they account for approximately 10% of the population (Dworkin & Gutierrez, 1989). Although gay rights and gay liberation embodied significant movements toward freedom from oppression for gay activists of the late 1960's and 1970's, that freedom-to-be is not a reality yet today. Today's gay youth, not yet born when the gay revolution caught fire, are relegated to a stigmatized role in a homophobic society. (In this paper the term "gay" will be used to refer to both male and female genders.)
