Abstract

In 1961 Douglas wrote that the primary school library was "firmly established as a necessary part of a good modern school, but in truth it does not seem to have been accepted by educators or by the taxpaying citizenry for centralized elementary library facilities and services are not commonly available to elementary students. This study intends to summarize some of the writings and research in this area and to provide a comparative analysis between selected research and current opinion by use of an opinionnaire administered to 24 librarians, 35 classroom teachers, and 11 administrators. The respondents were enrolled in summer school classes at the University of Northern Iowa. The opinionnaire used in this study was meant only to serve as an indication and not as a conclusive statement of fact.
