Abstract

School librarians have traditionally selected only those books for purchase that were "needed. 11 The curriculum supposedly a1ctated what books were purchased. In recent years, the changing roles of libraries have suggested a wider range of materials is necessary. Also a new awareness of the importance of materials selection in "defining what and how children are expected to learn" exists.
