Abstract

For more than a century, South Carolina’s African Americans came to Beaufort National Cemetery each May on Decoration Day, later called Memorial Day, to honor the Union soldiers buried within its walls. In 1890 they declared, "We come here today not to deplore a lost cause, but to celebrate a momentous victory.” What explains the enduring connection of the African American community to this cemetery?
