Abstract
Two monuments dedicated to Union soldiers have stood in Beaufort National Cemetery since 1868. Both exist because of the resolve of a dedicated nurse, Irish immigrant, Eliza Potter. During the Civil War, few in Charleston shared her family's pro-Union views or her concern for the deplorable conditions faced by sick and injured Union prisoners. Her strong determination gained her access to care for the suffering soldiers. Like other soldiers and nurses during the war, she felt compelled to record the names of the dead. She promised they would be remembered permanently in stone.
