Abstract

A solemn tranquility greets those who enter Beaufort National Cemetery, conveying it's noble purpose. The cemetery dates to the Union occupation of Beaufort during the Civil War. Its first burials in 1863 were soldiers who died in nearby hospitals. Eventually, many Union service men who died along the Southeastern coast would be buried here.
