Abstract
Those in adult and continuing education have long pursued the goal of equipping persons to undertake learning that is self-planned and self-directed (Knowles, 1975; Tough, 1971). In an environment of rapid social and technological change, accompanied by exponential growth in the production and dissemination of knowledge in virtually all fields, preparing students for a lifetime of learning-a learning society-is not something nice to do, but something essential to accomplish. A high quality of life simply is not accessible to those who have not learned to learn for a variety of complex purposes and situations.
