Abstract

It is the purpose of this study to compile and organize information concerning the fundamental physical and mechanical techniques of playing each of the orchestral string instruments, such that with this sourcebook of information, the inexperienced string teacher or converted band man could establish and maintain a successful string program in the public schools of America. It is assumed that the musical concepts concerning interpretation, phrasing, form, theory. and counterpoint are a part of the inexperienced string teacher's background. The writer, due to lack of playing and teaching experience with string instruments, has not endeavored to lay down original string teaching concepts. An attempt was made to gather the ideas and teaching techniques used by some of the most prominent string teachers in America today, and organize these techniques into a logical order for use by the inexperienced string teacher.
