Abstract
The image of the traveling player is a vivid one that is often found in the volumes of theatre history. There have been periods in the thousands of years since the beginning of the theatre during which people would not or could not go to the theatre. Consequently, the theatre has, through the centuries, gone to the public. This practice of taking theatre to the people has not diminished in popularity since its earliest beginnings, and it is done frequently by professional theatre groups today. Unfortunately, touring groups tend to rely on the production of popular fare such as Broadway hits and musical reviews, and they tend to perform in large urban centers where they will be relatively assured of an audience.
