Abstract
Since the end of World War II there has been an increasing number of trips by the graduating classes of Iowa high schools. The present heavy emphasis on senior class trips is reflected in the vast amount of advertising literature school administrators receive concerning educational tours. The writer received during the 1956-1957 academic year fourteen brochures concerning various cities. The increased interest in such trips is also shown by the fact that one railroad carried 60,000 students on school trips in 1954, and another 50,000. Washington, D.C., has one-half million student visitors each spring, while Detroit has 2,000 visiting school groups yearly. Many teachers had the opportunity to travel with the armed forces during World War II, and from their experiences they may have become convinced that travel is broadening. Improved safety and ease of travel may also have had some influence on the increased number of trips taken by graduating classes.
