Abstract
The prominence of Iowa in national political affairs has long since declined. A little more than a half century ago her sons were high in the councils of state. Her Senators had acquired great prestige; her Representatives spoke with a voice of authority in Bouse committees. An Iowan was Speaker of the House of Representatives and ten important congressional committee chairmanships were held by Iowans. Two cabinet portfolios--the Treasury and Agriculture--were held by men from the Hawkeye state. Iowans twice neared the presidential office and one might have ridden into office on an assassin's bullet had he previously been willing to accept the vice presidency.
