Shaw, Bernard, --1856-1950;
Abstract
One of an infinite number of descriptions of George Bernard Shaw portrays him as a young Irishman who descended upon England with broom in hand, and, finding it full of philistine abominations, proceeded to make things lively for his self-satisfied host by sweeping the stables clean. Any sensible estimate of this remarkable man must at least admit to his having left England a different place than it· was when he found it. Indeed, his influence has extended beyond the bounds of his time and place; he stood like· a great cosmic giant astride the span of a near-century-one foot planted on the latter half of nineteenth-century Victorian England, the other upon the first half of the twentieth century, with its devastating wars and its unparalleled exploration of scientific frontiers. Shaw was born in 1856 and died in 1950. He lived a longer life than almost any other literary man in history, and the very point in time at which he lived is an important factor in offering an explanation of his emotional disposition.
