Abstract

This play concerns a revolution that occurs in a small, independent nation. The nation is called Hebrus, and it is a jungle country. One great industry has made the land prosperous, an industry founded by a brave, hard, and ambitious American. His name was Gemaedan. The wealth that the industry gave him, and the power that was hie as its owner made him a proud man. The people of Hebrus loved him. As he grew older, and wealthier, he returned to America. He died there, leaving to hi son , Max, a symbol of his power: the machete he had used to cut his way through the jungles of Hebrus years ago . This play tells the story of that son. His mother died when he was born; his father seemed to blame him for her death. The boy seemed weak, and the father loved only strength. The boy grew up. Even after his father had died, he still wanted his love; he wanted power.
