Abstract
Al though a major part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis and evaluation of a particular work of narrative literature, it is obvious that such an analysis presupposes the existence of a general theory of literature. A critic's theory of literature determines, to some extent, the kind of criteria he may use to evaluate a particular work. In addition, the theory of literature held by the critic may have a direct influence upon his system of analysis. For these reasons, Chapter II has been given over to an elucidation of this writer's views about the nature and function of literature.
