Abstract

It is a great injustice to judge a person's life by the incidents that occupy a period of only one-tenth of his career. Yet that has happened in the case of William Worth Belknap. Not only has his career been judged by events covering such a small period of time, but the information that has appeared about him has been colored by the same events. Therefore, it is fitting that before Belknap's record in conjunction with the trader-post scandal as Secretary of War is examined, his total career should be sketched. To the best of this writer's knowledge, no accurate biography of him has been published.
