  • UNI’s First Woman Professor: Laura Ensign and the Struggle for Fair Pay, Rank, and Faculty Governance under Gilchrist and Seerley by Thomas G. Connors

UNI’s First Woman Professor: Laura Ensign and the Struggle for Fair Pay, Rank, and Faculty Governance under Gilchrist and Seerley

    Thomas G. Connors

Coming Soon... At 29, Laura Ensign’s appointment to the faculty of Iowa’s new State Normal School should have been an unqualified triumph. [Image 1] Yet her hiring by the Board over the objections of James Gilchrist, the school’s principal, placed her under an administrator who detested her from the start. She lived, ate, and worked with her colleagues, pupils, and Gilchrist and his family in the same isolated building on a hill two miles from town. Near her wits’ end after eight years, Ensign tried one final maneuver, one so risky that it would have cost her job had it failed: She began secretly recruiting a replacement for her nemesis months before the Board met and decided to force him out. And so Homer Seerley came to Cedar Falls, where he became the most significant figure in the university’s history, and made Ensign’s life a lot easier.

A Brief History of Kappa Delta Pi, Psi Chapter

Stephen J. Fortgang and Becky W. Hawbaker

The Psi Chapter at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) was the twenty-third KDP chapter, installed on August 7th, 1923. Mabel I. Payne, the Secretary/Treasurer of the National KDP organization was in attendance as the installation officer. Eight other chapters were installed that year, and by its 25th anniversary in 1936, KDP had grown to 106 chapters nationally. Early members of the Psi Chapter included the State Teacher’s College President Homer Seerley as an honorary member and Dr. E. O. Finkbender of the Department of Education, who became the chapter counselor.

  • A Review of the History and Development of Emeritus Status at the University of Northern Iowa and its Predecessor Institutions, 1876-1996 by Ross A. Nielsen

A Review of the History and Development of Emeritus Status at the University of Northern Iowa and its Predecessor Institutions, 1876-1996

    Ross A. Nielsen

The names of 443 individuals are listed in this publication, all faculty members or administrators for whom I found evidence that emeritus status had been conferred, or that they had fulfilled the emeritus eligibility qualifications operating on the university campus at the time of completion of their active professional careers. I make no claim that this is an all-inclusive list. Listings found in catalogs and bulletins are incomplete. There is no source for identifying deceased emeriti. Prior to 1981, institutional policy did not require retiring or resigning faculty or administrators to apply for emeritus status; upon completion of twenty years of service at this institution, individuals were "considered to be emeritus." as a consequence, the names of many qualified individuals were overlooked in preparing lists for publication.

  • A University in Pursuit of Quality: The Future of Learning and Teaching at the University of Northern Iowa by G. Roger Sell and Barbara Lounsberry

A University in Pursuit of Quality: The Future of Learning and Teaching at the University of Northern Iowa

    G. Roger Sell and Barbara Lounsberry

How does a good university get even better? One response to this question is through ongoing deliberations on its mission and the environment for teaching and learning it is fostering. This volume seeks to capture this dialogue, to show what such deliberations toward quality are like at one mid-sized comprehensive university. As such, it does not claim to offer all the answers for enhancing the quality of higher education in America-although we hope you will find many provocative and useful ideas in these pages. Rather, this volume attempts to showcase a process for ensuring ongoing advancement.

Nearly 200 of our colleagues invested valuable time and effort during a two-day conference, "The Future of Learning and Teaching at the University of Northern Iowa," held on October 13-14, 1995 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

This volume is a product of that conference.

  • Continuity and Change: President Constantine Curris' Annual Address to the Faculty, 1983-1993 by Constantine Curris

Continuity and Change: President Constantine Curris' Annual Address to the Faculty, 1983-1993

    Constantine Curris

Since assuming office at the University of Northern Iowa in 1983, President Constantine (Deno) Curris has addressed the faculty at its opening meeting each fall. This collection of his annual speeches, prepared in recognition of his first ten years of service, reveals an overarching dedication to the university's mission in terms of continuity and change. These speeches cover a range of topics that continue to be pertinent. They demonstrate the president's support of academic freedom, his concern for academic integrity, his awareness of international interdependence, and his dedication to student advancement. Time and again President Curris reminds the faculty of UNI's historical legacy and the strength it derives from its tradition. Equally, he insistently challenges the faculty to think of what needs to be done to prepare students to enter the future with wisdom, expertise, and dedication to civic responsibility.

Academic Migration Patterns of University of Northern Iowa Students Who Received Bachelor's Degrees Fall Semester 1984 and Spring Semester 1985

    Gerald D. Bisbey and

The University of Northern Iowa, since 1876, has evolved from a single purpose teacher education institution to a more comprehensive institution offering a variety of majors in liberal and vocational arts in addition to maintaining and expanding the teacher education programs. With the change in mission came large increases in enrollment particularly in the liberal and vocational arts areas. In recent years the number of undergraduate students majoring in liberal and vocational arts has been about twice as large as the number majoring in teacher education. The change in mission and size of the University brought a need for information about the number of students enrolled in various curricula and the academic migration of students from one major to another. This study was designed to secure the desired information and to make some comparisons between recent teacher education and liberal and vocational arts graduates of the University.

Characteristics and Attitudes of Undergraduate Students Who Entered the University of Northern Iowa, Fall Semester 1982

Paul C. Kelso and Office of Student Research. University of Northern Iowa.

Over 80% of the new undergraduate freshmen direct from high school who enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa for the Fall Semester 1982 participated in a national survey designed to secure characteristics of students entering college as first time, full-time freshmen. The survey, a part of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP), was conducted jointly by the American Council on Education and the University of California at Los Angeles. A total of 188,692 freshmen, including 1,538 from UNI, from 350 institutions in the United States were included in the 1982 norms. The information secured from the UNI freshmen is shown in Tables 1, 2, and 2A.

The Student Information Form, administered during orientation or registration to the first-time, full-time freshmen was designed to secure biographic and demographic data, as well as data on the student's high school background, career plans, educational aspirations, financial arrangements, and current attitudes. (See Appendix A)

In addition to the information secured from the Student Information Form, a questionnaire (See Appendix B) containing ten supplemental questions pertaining only to University of Northern Iowa students was also completed by 1,440 new freshmen and 620 new transfers who entered UNI Fall Semester 1982. The responses are shown in Table 3.

This study was supported by funds from the Office of Dr. John J. Kamerick, President of the University of Northern Iowa.

It is essential in a successful job hunting campaign and in career planning to have access to information concerning career alternatives, government opportunities, sources for job leads, services of professional associations etc. The problem surrounding this issue for career planning and placement offices is not so much obtaining the information, but rather how to disseminate .it to students and advisors in the most efficient, comprehensive manner.

The UNI Office of Career Planning & Placement has developed the Career Information by Major handout to expedite the flow of information to students and advisors. The primary use of this handout is by students who want to know what career opportunities are available in their major.

  • A Self-Survey of the Iowa State Teachers College by Iowa State Teachers College

A Self-Survey of the Iowa State Teachers College

    Iowa State Teachers College

The Self-Survey Report of Iowa State Teachers College which is presented in these pages is the work of about one hundred members of the faculty whose names appear on a separate sheet. Because the completed reports of the various committees were in some instances longer than seemed necessary, some condensations and omissions were suggested by Dr. Leo Goggin, who read the entire manuscript before it was mimeographed, and by the undersigned. It is hoped that the making of these changes has not resulted in the omission of material which should have been included or in distortion of the report of any committee. The committees worked hard to make their reports accurate and complete.

As is inevitable in any active institution, reports of status which were correct when written will be obsolete before they are read by those most interested. This is particularly true in the case of the report on Student Personnel Services because of the changes in the administrative organization for that work.

The order of the survey reports is essentially that of the Revised Manual of Accrediting of the North Central association. Attention is called to the material in the appendix which may serve to clarify and amplify some of the reports.

In this day of rapid advancement in every field of activity, the public demands efficiency. Efficiency in any profession requires systematic, intensive training. The foremost educators of the world today are recognizing and trying to meet the situations in the field in its broadest sense. The "test of opportunity" is being withdrawn, and the privileges of the best in our higher institutions are being placed within the reach of all. This advantage is being made possible through a better teachers training and through the services rendered by Extension Divisions and Summer Schools in the Universities and Colleges over the entire nation.
