Abstract
Traditional filmmaking has been around since the late nineteenth century, where filmmakers would utilize black and white film and tedious developing processes, including the manual handling of chemicals, to create a feature film. Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, the first few 2D animated films came to life. Then, almost 100 years later, the digital age struck, bringing with it the ease of access for anyone to take out a camera and snap a picture, take a video, or even create a movie. In parallel with the development of digital filmography came 3D software, opening the creative capacity of cinematography to the limitless confines of the digital world. Using hybrid media, I brought all of them together as one, creating a short film that incorporates storytelling alongside each without losing out on the specifics of individual media sources. Taking care to emphasize their strengths as a medium of film in my own work, employing choppy animation on specific characters, adding animated characters to live action scenes, and more.
I chose this project as a culmination of my knowledge throughout college and an interest in expanding my work into a new format. I have made short films with digital cameras, created environments in 3D space, hand-animated in 2D, and more. I wanted to combine these many aspects into one. Unlike the challenges early pioneers of their fields had to face when creating their work, I brought all of these together with modern technology. From the Sony cameras available to me from the UNI campus, to Blender, to Adobe products such as Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop, I used a multitude of software to complete this project.
