Abstract

In 2005 with the impending adoption of the then-soon-to-be Iowa Core Curriculum by the Iowa Department of Education, the Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) began to encourage the use of formative assessments in the classroom as a way to help improve student achievement. The idea was not new - authors such as Rick Stiggins (2006), Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam (1998) - among others - have been writing about the use of formative assessment for many years in books and educational journals such as Phi Delta Kappan. What changed was the shift in focus and directives by the administration of the CRCSD towards greater adoption and use of formative assessment in the classroom by its teachers. With the legislative mandate of the Iowa Core Curriculum in 2008, it is now imperative that ALL teachers attend to "assessing for learning" as listed in the five Characteristics of Effective Instruction (para 4, n.d.) as well as the other effective pedagogies mentioned.
