Abstract

America has a very complex health care system. It is often required a welleducated individual "to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). It is also required multiple skills, like reading, writing, listening, speaking, mathematic, and decision-making (Safeer & Keenan, 2005).

90 million American adults have limited health literacy to navigate of the health care system in the United States. People with limited health literacy have trouble communicating with their health care providers, understand and adherence of medical information, medical usage. $73 billion health care cost was estimated in 1998 due to limited health literacy (Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004).

Studies show that symbol could help with the communication between patients and their health care providers, patient understand and adherence of medical information, recall of medical usage, find ways within clinical system, and also health education. Also, studies showed that symbol are more preferable by most people.

Symbols can help people with limited health literacy. However, there are also some suggestions on creating effective symbols. Symbols should look very closely like the actual object, should be simple, and include simple text for guidance.
