Abstract
The purpose of this study is three-fold: (1) to understand the process of strategic planning in nonprofit organizations, (2) the role and significance it plays, and (3) if there is measureable effectiveness in those nonprofit organizations that have a successful strategic planning process.
In the paper, Best Practices Strategic Planning, it says for any organization strategic planning is a valuable tool for ensuring success. It is a process of devising a series of attainable steps that will both propel the nonprofit toward a more accomplished future, and help it to focus on successfully fulfilling its mission (2001).
Strategic planning is more than ensuring a nonprofit organization will remain financially sound, it's projecting where the organization expects to be in five, ten or more years, and how it will get there. It is a systematic planning process involving a number of steps that identify the current status of the organization, including its mission, vision for the future, operating values, needs (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), goals, prioritized actions and strategies, action plans and monitoring plans (Best Practices Strategic Planning, 2001).
