Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the floor defensive efforts of the Northern Iowa volleyball team to the other teams of the Missouri Valley Conference. It was assumed that a training of a defensive attitude of not allowing any scoring attempt to touch the floor would make the University of Northern Iowa team superior to the other teams in floor defensive performance.

The numbers of balls hitting the floor and the numbers of successful digs performed by the UNI team and ten other teams were counted during 1995 Conference matches. This data was obtained from the official score sheets that provided the numbers of digs, and from 20 videotapes of the matches that supplied the number of scoring attempts hitting the floor. The UNI players were the only players who were informed about research purposes and measuring procedures.

Independent t test was used to compare the mean scores of the UNI team and the other teams. The difference between mean values of balls hitting the floor was found statistically significant. The mean scores of balls dug by UNI and the other teams did not show a significant difference.
