Abstract
This research paper described subjects' perceptions regarding the First Step Grief Support Group sponsored by Cedar Valley Hospice. Emphasis was placed on the group's ability to address three predictive factors for complicated mourning under study by Dale Lund, Ph.D. A confidential mailed questionnaire was used to gather subjects' perceptions. All persons completing all five sessions of First Step were included in the population (N=60). Responses to survey statements directly related to the factors under study were analyzed in relation to respondent's ·sex and the length of time between death and group participation. From this study it was determined that First Step did address the predictive factors under study by Lund. Subjects attending less than six months following the death found the group more helpful in addressing the predictive factors than did subjects participating twelve months or more after the death. Additional research in the area of grief and the use of support groups during bereavement was indicated. Responses are shown using frequency tables.
