Abstract

The quest for victorious supremacy within competitive athletics is a never-ending battle, a cutthroat process where the more successful athletes are willing to go to the extremes of physical training and nutritional modifications to gain any kind of edge over their opponents, many of whom are countering those efforts with the exact same type of self-fortifying tactics. Yet, the rudimentary human need for sleep is often an underestimated and forgotten weapon in enhancing and maximizing athletic performance. Furthermore, it would not be an exaggeration to categorize the basic existential tenant of sleep as the deal breaker for an athlete’s performance and success, as well as their overall general health. In this literature review, I will look at the impact of sleep quality on an athlete’s physical performance, the affect sleep quality has on the injury rates and immune systems of athletes, how sleep quality affects an athlete’s cognitive functioning and emotional state, and lastly, what type of sleep interventions can be used to improve athletic performance. Simply stated, the purpose of this literature review is to examine the relationship between sleep quality and the effect it has on the performance and health of athletes.
