Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the benefits of paying college football players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Football Bowl Subdivision (NCAA FBS) in order to reduce exploitation of these student-athletes, and ultimately deem a payment proposal for further consideration by the NCAA. The paying of student-athletes is necessary because millions of dollars are made per year from these sporting events. Paying these student-athletes would reduce NCAA exploitation of student-athletes. An additional benefit of paying these student-athletes will be the reduction of extra-benefit violations. This reduction in violations will occur because the need for these student-athletes to look elsewhere for cash would be reduced because they would be compensated from the school or NCAA.
The research focuses on eight possible payment options for college football players in the NCAA FBS to be compensated outside of their scholarships. The eight proposals are: A Student-Athlete Trust Fund, The Revenue Sharing Proposal, The Laundry Money Proposal, The Big Ten Payment Plan, The Work Study Proposal, The SEC Game Pay Proposal, The Endorsement Proposal, and The Collegiate Players Union. The institutions that the payment proposals will be aimed at are those in the NCAA "Power Conferences". Those NCAA Conferences are: The Atlantic Coastal Conference, The Big Ten Conference, The Big 12 Conference, The Pacific-12 Conference, and the Southeastern Conference. On top of the in-depth analysis of the payment proposals the research also looks into the exploitation of these student-athletes, NCAA regulations, Federal Laws and Acts, financial issues in collegiate sports, the commercialization of college football and the cost of each payment proposal for an athletic department.
It is recommended that FBS student-athletes should be compensated for their participation in college football. The Collegiate Players Union will be the best option for FBS student-athletes. The Collegiate Players Union gives FBS student-athletes a voice against NCAA and School/University Administration, allows them to develop a unified payment proposal from picking different aspects of the offered payment proposals, and lastly they will be considered employees of their respective schools so they will receive full health benefits from their school.
