Abstract
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the United States. Common medical practice attempts to treat this disease with medical procedures and pharmacologic therapy and works to prevent the disease or reduce further risk through the modification of known risk factors. Although these practices are generally successful, there is growing interest in the public domain for alternative therapies that address the psychosocial domain of the disease, empower the patient, and potentially reduce side-effects of current medical treatment. Mind/body approaches represent a commonly pursued alternative. This review provides background into the development of the mind/body concept. Articles for review were selected to describe the current state of mind/body techniques therapeutic impact on two established risk factors for coronary heart disease: hypertension and Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP).
