Abstract
The interrelated components of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis make up the female athlete triad. All physically active girls and women are at risk for the triad, though some athletes are more susceptible than others. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM, 1997), the underlying development of the triad results from pressures that are often placed on women in order to "achieve or maintain unrealistically low body weight" (p. 1 ).
