Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the cholesterol levels and demographic data obtained from a mass cholesterol screening program conducted by the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross in Black Hawk County, Iowa. Inherent sub-problems included investigation of the relationship, if any, between cholesterol and age, race, and sex.

A screening for plasma cholesterol levels was conducted in Black Hawk County, Iowa by the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross at community worksites and public sites. The subjects of this study were 466 volunteer participants who were systematically selected from the 4,660 people screened.

The cholesterol levels obtained from the Reflotron and the demographic data from the registration forms were used to develop a descriptive summary and determine if a significant difference existed between cholesterol levels and sex, race, age, or number of times screened. T-tests did reveal a significant difference in cholesterol levels in all age ranges except between the 20-29 age group and the 30-39 age group. No other significant differences were found,
