Abstract
Many educators know from anecdotal experience that when students are hungry or undernourished, they tend to be irritable, apathetic, and lethargic. They often have little energy and have difficulty concentrating. All of these factors can interfere with learning as well as initiate inappropriate classroom behavior. This study reviews the available body of published research pertaining to the effects of nutrition upon cognitive and behavioral performance in the classroom. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects of proper and improper nutrition of students on cognitive and behavioral performance in the context of examining the need for and value of nutritious snack interventions during the school day.
