Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in the United States (CDC, 2005) . The purpose of this study was to analyze past and current heart disease awareness and education methods with actual awareness of the population under study (women ages 18 - 70). Specifically, the objective of the study was to determine if the population under study is aware of their own personal risk factors, their comfort in discussing heart disease with their physician(s), the methods they use to attain information regarding heart disease, and the effectiveness of health educator methods (including physicians, health educators, and awareness programs). Additionally, awareness includes the ability for women to know their risk factors and understand the specific screenings or tests they may need and information they need to acquire from their physician.
Understanding the relationship between women's knowledge, perception, and awareness of cardiovascular disease and the education and information sources available to women could prove useful in developing awareness, intervention and educational programs specific to this population.
