Abstract
A screening of plasma cholesterol levels was conducted in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo, Iowa area in February, 1987. The project involved University of Northern Iowa - Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (CRP), University of Iowa - Lipid Research Clinics, area hospitals, health professionals, volunteers and screening instruments that provided cholesterol level results within 3 minutes. During the 108 hours of testing, 6,139 participants were screened. Fourteen and one half percent were at moderate risk and 15.6% were at a high risk for developing coronary heart disease. Educational efforts were directed through a Continuing Medical Educational (C.M.E.) program for medical professionals. The media, in the form of television, feature articles and radio, provided information for the general public. The screening program demonstrated that a large population screening can be successfully implemented.
