Abstract
Most nonprofit organizations depend on the volunteers who serve on their board of directors to guide them and help carry out their mission. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics which make these leaders effective in their roles. The study will also look at the volunteers' responsibilities to the organizations which they serve. Finally, organizations need to be aware of what motivates these volunteers and how they can use these motivations to their advantage. To have a successful board of directors, executive directors must understand how to effectively identify, recruit and train the individuals who serve on the board of directors.
