Abstract
Research comparing departmentalized-types of classroom organizational plans to self-contained classroom plans for fifth and sixth grade students was studied. The most current research available on the topic was compiled in one paper to help guide educators when making:decisions about changing the organizational plan of their school. The research was collected from educational journals and doctoral dissertations. The research suggests that in the area of academic achievement the self-contained classroom may be superior. Many teachers and most students prefer the departmentalized classrooms. Schools should move slowly in changing from self-contained to departmentalized classrooms until more current research has been done.
