Abstract
The proponents of individual therapy and family systems therapies advocate their respective approaches as the preferred modality. The case is frequently presented as dichotomous: either therapy works with individuals (whose interpersonal relationships are viewed as relevent) or it deals with systems (Massey, 1986). The purpose of this research paper is to integrate an individual therapy, specifically Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) within a systemic framework. A theoretical approach, Dialectical Metatheory in Family Therapy (Weeks, 1986), accomodates [sic] this individual/systems perspective by transcending this dichotomy and eliminating the polarization of an either/or thinking.
