Abstract

American families today have life-styles that are different from the life-styles lived by the parents when they were children. Although children are spending more time away from parents due to parental work demands, the parents are still the most important people in their children's lives (Gestwicki, 1987). It is universally accepted that the family, not the school, is the most vital single contextual influence on the development of the child (Carlson, 1986).
