Abstract

In 1934, more than fifty years before the arrival of personal computers, Thomas Frederick Blanchard, a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, stated the following: "The teacher of composition as an art is particularly assisted by the employment of usable devices. It is true that every competent instructor will invent devices of his own, but no competent instructor should refuse aid wherever he finds it" (p. ix).
