Abstract

Educators in secondary schools have become increasingly concerned about the levels of reading comprehension of their students. This concern has stemmed in part from growing public awareness of the levels of illiteracy in the United States and the belief that future society will require an increasingly literate people. Educators at all levels who seek ways to help their students learn from the printed materials available in their curricula have been hindered in the past in two main areas (Devine, 1986).
