Abstract
When a child is dying of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, or cancer, the child is referred to as "the victim of chronic or terminal illness". That child is not the only victim. The destructive effects of such diseases spread to all members of the families of those affected. New events and activities such as the care of the patient, trips to the hospital, and absences of family members due to hospitalizations become a part of the everyday lives of these families. Family life, as it was once known, no longer appears to exist. Even periods of remission of the child's illness are overshadowed by the ever present knowledge that the respite won't last forever. A constant cycle of feelings ranging from anxiety, guilt, neglect, denial, anger, and depression begins to affect every member of the family (Bluebond-Langner, 1989).
