Abstract
The proposal and manuscript for Quatie is an attempt to write a children's book which projects a positive image of Native Americans to white and Native people. Research for the project involved a review of children's literature on Cherokees, information on writing for children, illustrations, and Cherokee history. The book was set in the Cherokee Nation 1878. The main characters were two female Cherokee children and their grandmother. Before writing, elements of the plot were sent to the Cherokee Nation officers for prior approval. After completion, the manuscript was sent with an evaluation form to the Cherokee Nation. The manuscript Quatie was approved by the tribe.
